December 2nd | ShootQ

december-2-shootq

I know that you have heard of Jeeves, Alfred, or Daroda, and now I wanted to introduce you to the newest form help that puts everything else to shame! SHOOTQ! She is the ultimate studio manager. She quite literally is the other end of our love triangle and the crucial part of the Flying V.

ShootQ has been another amazing novelty that has liberated us from paper cuts and paper trail nightmares. She does everything from organizing our day, keeping us on time, reminding us when to eat, and brings to our attention what we need to know at that moment. Sorry, that wasn’t all entirely true. ShootQ doesn’t really keep us on time :P

With version 2 rolling in for next year’s clients, we are going to be way more than blown away. I say this because V.1 was already stellar! I can’t even imagine how much more efficient ShootQ 2.0 will be.

ShootQ is invaluable to our studio and we wouldn’t know what to do without it. She is brains of the whole operation and has saved us countless hours of number crunching, invoicing, organizing, and management. True, we don’t spend an hour on each all the time – but a minute here and a minute there – it sure does add up quickly! So for that, Thank you LaCour for producing and amazing system. And thank you ShootQ for being so good to us!

ShootQ … You’re RAD!

Shout out to : THE DQ QUIKEYS!!!

december-1-quikeys

Our December shout outs are way for us to recognize people, places, and things that have meant the world to us this past year. We just want to take the time this month to place these tools, musings, inspirations, and/or aspirations out on a pedestal for everyone to see.

The first shout out goes to something that has been so integral in our workflow, and has allowed us to create the absolute greatest images and art for our clients. It has allowed us to create masterpieces, instead of thinking technically of how to achieve it! That’s right …. The DQ Quikeys.

The Quikeys has given us the freedom to work on our business and not fiddle with the tedious tasks of photoshop. The Quikeys is not just a piece of hardware – it is the heart of our editing and marketing workflow.

I can’t imagine RAD Studio without the Quikeys. I personally believe that this has totally liberated the way we think, and has given us more time to provide excellent service for our clients.

To give a little preview of just some of the things we use them for:

The blank layer allows us to select and tweak images as necessary

The Green layer allows us to make more adjustments to the fine selected images

The Red layer allows us to create the fine art images that you see

The Green and Red layer creates our albums, promotions, advertisements, and wall galleries.

Thank you Dave and Quin Cheung for dreaming, designing, and delivering the amazing Quikeys. A tool that our business could not live without!

Quikeys… You’re RAD

December Shout Out’s – Next Week!

Stay tuned everybody because the shout outs are making their comeback next Monday!

We’ve received a couple emails asking what these shout outs are, and now I want to take the time just to let everyone know our purpose for giving these shout outs!

In church recently we have been going through the subject of Honour. We’ve been compelled to give credit where it’s due. We are very thankful for not only where we are in life, but also how far we have come. We would like to take every weekday of December to give honour to a significant person, place, or thing (Noun hehe) through a shout out. These P.P.T.s have been a huge part of our life (and/or business ventures that have improved our life) in the past year. We know that we can only have 20 days of shout outs so it obviously can’t contain everything we are thankful for – but we still wanted to have a great start!

See you all in 7 days!

Public Service Announcement by Dwigt Shrute

After hanging out with the fabulous Genevieve and Kevin, I was inspired (not compelled through fear (well, maybe a little bit)), to post this very important public service announcement. Gen and I share the same paralyzing fear of sharks. However, she brought up many points of why bears should be a force to be reckoned with. Since us Vancouverites are more likely going to be mauled by a bear as opposed to being digested by a shark, I thought it wise for me to post this very important safety information by a bear expert.

Happy Camping All,

Connie & James | October 18, 2008

From the get go, this wedding was SOOO darn chill. Now, chill encompasses many things. Boring and lethargic are not among them. From the start of the morning to the end of the night, it was literally a celebration, – but it was seriously a crazy party! We could not help but notice the details, but also be so entranced with what was going on around us because we feel that Connie and James resemble our personalities the most out of everyone that we have shot! From saying, ‘Oh Snap’ when the song “Poison” comes on, to already owning what Lucas had in the movie “the Wizard” – we knew first had that these two knew how to throw a party!

My day started off with the guys leisurely taking their time. No rush or sense of urgency. The tone was set by James, who was more than calm, he was just so ready for the day. They started off with Xbox 360, they got ready, we went out to shoot them in his backyard for, what passerbyers would call, ‘GQ cover shots’, then back inside for a couple more shots, scratch and wins, and another round of NHL ‘09 before they headed off to the church – with plenty of time to spare might I add.

As the ball got rolling, you couldn’t have seen happier parents observe their two children tying the knot. As James anxiously waited for his bride to walk down the aisle, so did everyone else. She rocked a sweet dress, very stylish! It was made by the very same person that made Danelle’s bridesmaid dresses.

Time and time again, we always say to everyone we meet, “nothing beats a very personalized reception”. We love it to death! Now, you don’t have to change up the buffet, or the ‘traditional’ events, inside the reception – just add your personalities to it! From the bridal party shmoozing on in, to the “come on down”- price is right – entrance to the bride and groom, the tone was set! We even took table shots that lasted no more than 30 mins, and there was quite a few tables! Talk about efficiency, my teacher heart is smiling! Their slideshow was not just a bunch of pictures fading in an out, it was pieced together with a mockumentary performed by their family and friends. LOVED IT! The speeches ended off with the MC saying, “that was a pretty damn good speech” ALL of them were crazily amazing! You know it was a good speech when it is topped off with the father of the bride re-proposing to his spouse. Ya, it was ‘pretty damn good’.

The icing wasn’t the fact that the dance floor was so literally packed from the start to when we left, that people were dancing on the carpet! But the icing was the first dance. They mixed it with hip hop and traditional folk. It was amazing! and at one point Tinikling sticks came out! Ya! That’s right! Tinikling sticks – that’s the foot death dance!

These are a few shots from their day:

It was an amazing day for an amazing couple. And one thing is for sure, although the events were larger than life, it didn’t take away any attention from the bride and groom. They were both so into each other a new born puppy would be jealous. Their love is so genuine and was affirmed through their family and friends throughout the day, and they are not only fun, but fabulous together. Connie and James, we pray all the best for your new found adventure together!

Cecilia and John | September 27, 2008

Cecilia and John enjoyed a gorgeous September day. I began the day with her as she got ready and there really was no sign of rush or alarm, she just had a smile on her face with a glow and calm about her. What a way to start the day! We could just tell that they both were just beaming with excitement. I talked to Ral about how John was doing while he and the guys were getting ready and all Ral could say was that John was so anxious and waited in eager expectation to get married – he really couldn’t contain it! But getting to know Cecilia, I can see why. She is beautiful and bright.

Since I’ve known John, he has always been into basketball and always had the latest Jordans. Cee had her own cute pair while John and the guys had their own cool pair.  So, I wasn’t surprised to see that at least one pair of Jordans made an appearance.  And with that, I just had to take ring shots with that shiny box!

The whole day was memorable. Watching them celebrate with family and friends was such a great entrance to a happy married life. Hearing words that were long overdue, experiencing hugs that said enough within itself and tears that expressed the deepest love and appreciation were a few touching moments that showed themselves to be powerful throughout the day.

And how awesome is it to bask in the celebration of love?! They have this deep sense of understanding and respect that has fleshed itself out to being a relationship that stands out. Spending time with them during their session, watching them during their wedding day and seeing them last Saturday at my sister’s wedding made me smile as I walked away from my conversation with Cecilia. She glowed. That’s all I can say.

JB and Cee, welcome to married life. A lot of people have different things to say about it but perhaps its better to observe what is done, not so much what is said. Love is an action. It can show itself at the most intense of times and yet in the most quietest as well. Bask in it and be committed to share it. I will never forget our conversation at that reception table Cee. You and John love each other and it has truly been awesome to observe that and celebrate with you.

We’re always here for you guys!

And I am amused.

Stellar. Incredible. I am pleased.

Vanity Fair has been my visual and literary lullaby to sweet dreams for quite a long time now. Indulgent taste, intriguing literary items, and imagery that exceeds the bounds of artistic excellence are what I conclude of this extraordinary publication (and yet I still feel like I cannot properly articulate my respect and high regard)…

I just had to express my delight as I have added Vanity Fair: The Portraits: A Century of Iconic Images to my arsenal of admiration and inspiration. It is a purchase that will continue to show itself to be a valuable investment.

I recommend it.

RAD Portraits!

Hello! (I’m waving)

After shooting quite a slew of wicked cool portraits, we’ve decided we must put up a separate site for our beloved portraits. We’re working on it! We’re still very much in wedding mode right now so it’ll be up in time but we’re just so excited to share the news that ‘YES! We currently are accepting portrait clients’ (but actually we always have but haven’t put much emphasis on it). We don’t really know how it all happened… it kinda just came to be and blew up!

We are lovin’ the pets! Boy, does Yaletown love their animals!!

So, if you know anyone who’d like a portrait session, you may let them know that we’re down!

It’s so official.

It’s Back!!! The Office!!! It’s Back!!!!

Hey guys, just in case you have been living under a rock of some sort and had no idea – we wanted to let you know that The Office is back on NBC for this season. The Office makes us want to stand on top of a mountainside and declare our love for it. Unfortunately we don’t have a mountain around our neighborhood. But I do have a computer and a wordpress account – so we just to let you know Danelle and I have a healthy love for each other, skee ball, and The Office <not necessarily in that order> =)

We grabbed a few shots last night. Leave me a comment if you get it =)

I’m gonna leave you with this video. Classic! JUST CLASSIC!

Gen & Kevin | September 13, 2008

The weddings just keep getting better and better! I mean seriously! Gen and Kev have become friends and we just couldn’t wait to shoot their wedding. I learned another great thing about Gen… this girl has wonderful taste in shoes! She started off the day with a pair of smokin’ heels by Marc Jacobs and changed in to a sweet pair of flats by Stuart Weiztman, and all the while prancing in her gorgeous Nicole Miller dress. She was a vision… I’ve been going through their wedding images and can’t help but tell Ral that Gen is breathtaking! All yous, I encourage you to be in her company at some point. Her confidence, poise, warm heartedness and welcome are a delight. So imaging all that on her wedding day. BREATHTAKING, I tell you!

Kevin, her new husband was just beaming. Glowing, so happy… you see, he’s the guy you go to to get your wedding and engagement rings done. He’s so talented and so detailed, I just couldn’t help but admire the time and thought that went into the intricacies of the day. They both should be soooooo proud! And being that Kevin’s role is to hand off rings to people who are about to solidify their commitment, he just had to hand off a rockin’ ring to Gen! Oh and his ring… I was thinking the whole time, ‘can I have one?’ hahaha, so many people just had to get a closer look! Kev, you’re super talented!

So, they love each other. And beyond all of the terrific details lays this passion and love that has stood the test of time (childhood couple, for real) and they celebrated with a bang! I can’t articulate what they have. I don’t want to ruin it. But if you’re ever in Yaletown and see them together, you’ll just know that connections like theirs are what good books are made of. Their live out great lives and I have to admit, I truly respect them. You’ll get a closer glimpse into their day in time but for now here’s a tiny squeak,

enjoy!

He actually had a full round of gorgeous diamonds on the inside!!

Gen and Kev, you make people happy. So many people love you. You both are incredible.

xo|danelle

*I forgot to add. There was a mystery photographer who was trying to get a piece of the action during the receiving line at Christ Church Cathedral… if anyone knows who that was, we’re interested to know. But if it was you and you’re reading this, we would appreciate it if you were to make sure that permission is asked before you decide to take shots. We’re not scary people and we like helping out, but just don’t be weird and shoot literally behind our backs. Be cool.

Connie and James

Connie and James are cool. Doing their shoot felt like hanging out with friends. What we love about them is that they’re so full of life and super down to earth. Shooting their session was a breeze… they are so great together! They gave us so many levels, from striking that pose to a larger than life smile that often turned in to a ginormous burst of laughter, it was gold! We found it quite apparent from their playfulness that within their relationship, they have a strong friendship. Whether it be playing video games or just plain joking around, they are sure to entertain. What more can you say about fun-loving personalities… you just like being around them. =)

Take a look:

Connie and James, we’re incredibly happy for you both. Continue to see life together as an adventure and keep the laughter coming. Its an honor and privilege to marry your best friend and it looks like you guys get to enjoy that blessing.

Cecilia and John

John and Cecilia are a fantastic couple. They are so much fun and their personalities are really friendly and warm. I know John from a while back – A WHILE BACK. We grew up together. His younger sister, Liz was my best friend growing up and John was always off playing basketball while we sometimes played in his room (not a secret anymore!). Both Ral and were super excited to come out and shoot this session. This was a great time for us to hang out with them (long overdue) and get to know the new addition to the family, Cecilia – she’s fabulous! She worked it like a model and made me proud! There was this freshness and kind nature that just exuded during our shoot. =)

Here’s a tiny glimpse:

JB and Cee, we’re immensely happy for you both and are looking forward to quite an amazing wedding day. Keep up the fun and laughs that you so easily share and enjoy this couple of weeks that you still have as fiance(e). Oooh, so exciting…

The Office In Our Office!

We haven’t had much time to blog (sorry!) but we’ve wanted to give you guys some quick & weekly personal updates that make us smile!

Anyone that really knows us knows that we are die hard fans of the show, “The Office” and so what better than to have 2 of our most favorite characters in our office! Enter, Michael and Dwight! Julie and Juan, from “the amazingly hot Julie and Juan” (also huge Office fans) have become good friends and gave these amazing bobble heads to us as a gift!

I asked Ral to help me out with a witty “that’s what she said” ending. Unfortunately, he said he didn’t have time, but the next time I ask he said he would think a lot longer and harder.

New & Improved!

Moving into our home came with a lot of work that needed to be done and we’ve been slowly getting to each room (but our yard is quite a beast to be tackled). We actually moved in during a weekend where we had to shoot 2 weddings and the busy schedule has pretty much been steady ever since. Our home needed some love and so I wanted to show you guys some of our latest developments thus far. This was actually our office before but since it was such a good space to relax, we need to move our office to another room and make this our official meeting space. We’re trying to work on each room as much as we can but for such a space, time is not really on our side. We’ll try to blog our latest developments but here’s where this room is at thus far!

(just realized the Apple TV is supposed to be on the top cubby of the TV but is MIA… hmmm, probably Ral. Anyway, if you don’t have it – get it! we looove it!!)

If you have any suggestions or would like to help us show some love to our home (gardeners, anyone?) please let us know!
